One of my favorite “Everybody Loves Raymond” episodes on TV involved fruit! As a Christmas surprise Raymond has a box of fruit delivered to his mother Marie, which she wants to give back to him since she and her husband don’t eat much fruit. Raymond then tells her the gift is not just one box but that he paid for a box of fruit to be delivered every month for one year! Marie’s chicken-little response is a priceless “Every month?! My God, what am I supposed to do with all that fruit?!!!”
For Marie the prospect of a future filled with monthly deliveries of fruit turned out to not be a gift but a burden of terror! How many of us also view the unknown-ness of our future as a distressing mystery? When younger we all had dreams of what our future would look like, feel like, even sound like. However, often Life has other plans for us! Speaking about his life a friend commented to me, “It’s not what I wanted but it’s where I am.” The interesting thing is that he wasn’t speaking about his present with disappointment but with excitement!
Somehow he had learned to adapt his dreams as Life took twists and turns, arriving at a today of which he had never dreamed! And yet he is supremely happy! When asked about his current happiness his response was, “The heart knows even when the head refuses to!” As life took him out of his own hands he learned to listen to his heart’s whisperings and adapt the dreams in his head accordingly! Each day life is a meal waiting to be eaten! But a meal can only be eaten bite by bite and that is the secret! Each day eat the meal that life offers you even if it is a dish that you haven’t ordered! Learn to enjoy each bite… especially if it’s fruit that you don’t want!
